Instagram's vertical grid and new video app "edit's".

If you opened up Instagram over the weekend and felt a wave of horror that your perfectly curated Insta grid was no more, then you're not alone. It's RIP to the square 1:1 instagram format and hello to the new vertical grid. Instagram has been testing it's new format since 2022 with Adam Mosseri saying that most users now post in the vertical format. SO...here's what we need to know...

  • What is the new aspect ratio?

The new grid showcases images in a 4:5 aspect ratio.

  • What are the image dimensions that we need?

To ensure optimal display within this format, it's recommended to upload images sized at 1080 pixels wide by 1350 pixels tall.

Instagram is aware that its users work hard to maintain a desire aesthetic to their grids and is working on tools to improve the ability to customise thumbnails to allow the users to achieve a layout they are satisfied with (we shall see what this brings!).

INstagram's new video app, "edit's"

To soften the blow, Instagram has announced a new video editing app called Edits, which is set to launch on the iOS App Store on 13th March 2025 (available to pre-order now). This has been designed to provide users with a comprehensive suite of video tools for creating videos directly on their mobile phones.

The key features are said to include:

  • Enhanced Camera Functionality: To offer a higher-quality camera within the app to capture superior footage.
  • Advanced Editing Tools: To include various features to refine and personalise videos, such as trimming, filters, transitions, and effects.
  • Inspiration and Drafts Tabs: To provide dedicated sections for creative ideas and managing drafts, allowing users to track and revisit their projects.
  • Performance Analytics: To deliver insights into video performance, including metrics like follower-to-non-follower ratios and content skip rates, enabling creators to understand and enhance audience engagement.

This strategic move by Instagram comes in response to the uncertain future of TikTok and its associated apps, aiming to provide creators with robust tools to produce and share engaging content within the Instagram ecosystem.
